Parashat Hashavua: Second in Dynasty = First Opportunity

While the command to build a sanctuary, about whose construction we are completing to read this week, talks of a Mikdash, Moshe built only a Mishkan, whereas the Beit Hamikdash had to wait hundreds of years until the time of Shlomo. It is clear that David yearned to build the Beit Hamikdash and that Hashem withheld this opportunity from him. The big question is why.

Ask the Rabbi: A Yad in the Bathroom

I have a yad (pointer) for a sefer Torah which is a family heirloom. When I lain, I like to use it, so I stick it in my pocket and bring it with me. While it is in my pocket, can I enter a bathroom?

Ein Ayah: Internal Remorse; External Acceptance

If [a borrower] returns a loan during Shemitta, [the lender] should say “I absolve [you from paying the loan].” If [the borrower] said: “Despite this,” he should receive the payment, as the pasuk says, “This is the matter [lit., the saying] of Shemitta.” Similarly, an unintentional murderer who went to exile in his city of refuge and the people of the city want to honor him, should tell them “I am a murderer.” If they say to him, “Despite this,” he should accept [the honor] from them, as it says, “This is the matter [lit., the saying] of the murderer.”

P'ninat Mishpat: Lost Collateral

Reuven lent money to Shimon, and Shimon gave him valuable collateral worth more than the value of the loan. The collateral has disappeared and was most likely stolen. The question is whether Reuven not only loses rights to receive the loan money in return but also has to pay Shimon the difference between the value of the collateral and the amount of the loan.
